Highly regarded author Michael Ham, who wrote Leisureguy’s Guide to Gourmet Shaving granted us permission to reprint his review:

"This bay rum is impressive: bold and solid and not clovish, with plenty of solid bay fragrance and the rum coming forward a bit. The fragrance is deeper and richer than my other bay rums, and strikes a nice balance of rum and bay. Lingers lightly, never too strong. I compared it to the better known Ogallala Bay Rum, and it was really no contest, Captain’s Choice is a much better bay rum. If you like bay rum, this is definitely one you should try."

"Captain’s Choice is a newcomer to the wetshaving market. Only a year ago Scott set out on a mission to create the perfect bay rum aftershave. After experimenting with numerous combinations of ratios and ingredients, he arrived at a formula that he thought was special. He offered samples in exchange for feedback, and although responses were very enthusiastic, Scott made some slight adjustments to the formula until it was perfect.

Not only did Scott spend countless hours creating the formula, he also took a lot of care with the packaging. The container is a traditional apothecary bottle with an “aged” nautical label. This personal touch is one of the benefits of turning to an artisan product, which is handcrafted by someone who cares about the wetshaver’s experience and not just the bottom line.

When I first looked at the aftershave, I was impressed with the product. The deep amber color is more like a natural rum and not a watered down aftershave. I shook the bottle and clearly saw botanicals floating in the oils – a sure sign that this is a handmade product and not a synthetic or chemical blend of ingredients.

Bay rum is a common fragrance known to most traditional wetshavers. It usually conjures up the aroma of an old school barbershop and is available in countless blends and styles. Captain’s Choice Bay Rum is unique in that it is balanced and not heavy in clove. It is a smooth fragrance, unlike cheap bay rum aftershaves that can be harsh and sting your nose when you sniff them. Captain’s Choice Bay Rum is warm and smooth with notes of cinnamon.

The primary ingredient is pure grain alcohol, so it is a true aftershave splash. This works as an antiseptic to keep any shaving cuts from becoming infected. It also works as a toner to close pores and tighten the skin. Pure alcohol aftershaves tend to dry the skin; however, Captain’s Choice includes glycerin to balance this effect. Another ingredient is witch hazel, a strong antioxidant and astringent that is often used as a natural remedy for soothing the skin.

I splashed on Captain’s Choice Bay Rum Aftershave and this product performed very well because it did a great job of being soothing and not drying out my skin. The splash dried quickly and left a good amount of fragrance that was pleasant and not overbearing.

Bottom line is that Scott has done an outstanding job of making a high-quality traditional aftershave that performs on par or better than others on the market that cost twice as much. Captain’s Choice Bay Rum Aftershave is a hand-crafted product that will serve you well if you want a traditional aftershave fragrance with a little personal touch."

Mark Herro (also referred to as Mantic59) is highly regarded for his series of YouTube instructional videos on shaving techniques. His website - Sharpologist - has now reviewed Captain’s Choice:

"For the past several months I have been on a dream ride with Captain’s Choice Bay Rum. With a clear deep amber color and a fresh distinctive aroma, one whiff when I first opened the vintage style bottle and I knew this was something I would enjoy. Captain’s Choice does have pure grain alcohol as it’s first ingredient, and we all know that alcohol’s one flaw is that it tends to dry your skin leaving your face drained and thirsting for a moisturizer. The Captain has skillfully addressed that with the addition of essential oils, Witch Hazel, and Glycerin helping create a crisp feeling that is not too harsh. I can feel my skin tightening as I let the splash do its work, and the oils and glycerin help to keep my face nourished.

If you are not a fan of alcohol let the aftershave sit in your hands for about 30 seconds, this will allow the alcohol to evaporate along with much of the bite. What is left is a rich, fresh mellow aroma that has quite the staying power. Throughout my day I occasionally get a wonderful whiff of the rum scent that is neither overpowering nor harsh, my face feels conditioned and happy.

The bottom line: There are a lot of A/S options to choose from; some of them not only pack quite a punch but also can put a dent on your wallet. Captain’s Choice Bay Rum is a product that has tremendous bang for the buck because it not only works well in soothing my freshly shaven face, but it also has a refreshing scent with holding power. In fact it has replaced my daily cologne. So the Captain has created a quality personal product that can serve double duty, and at $17.95 for a 4oz bottle, that is just fine for my pocketbook!"
