What is the story behind the name Old Ironsides? Stand by for a five sentence history lesson! The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat, launched in 1797 and still sailing today. It played a critical role in the War of 1812 that pitted the USA against the British (again!) where it earned its nickname. In a battle off the coast of Canada a number of British cannonballs bounced off the thick oak planks of the USS Constitution and fell into the ocean. The sailors who kept seeing this exclaimed, “It is as if her sides are made of iron!” Thus the name Old Ironsides. The metallic look of this lather bowl made the name an easy choice!

In a move away from pure copper, this lather bowl is an alloy of three different metals. Composed primarily of copper, zinc, and nickel it visually resembles silver but is not actually silver. This offering is the same size and style as our Heavyweight, Commander, Aquamarine, and Obsidian that each weigh around ten ounces. Due to the nature of this unique alloy the weight of Old Ironsides comes in at around six ounces.

Created by an artisan to our specifications these lather bowls are created one at a time. Each begins as a sheet of metal alloy. Following application of the hammered finish, ridges are impressed into the bottom to help expedite the lathering process. The sides are fashioned to achieve a stunning contoured profile that is ideal for containing the lather.  The convenient thumb rest is affixed to the exterior and is slightly indented for a secure grip. Lastly, the company name is stamped into the bottom.

The beauty of this handmade item is that each one will differ slightly.  The natural imperfections along with the individual craftsmanship of each bowl ensure that no two will be exactly the same. They measure approximately 4 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" deep and will appear similar to the one that is pictured.

Care instructions: Hand wash only -- do not place in dishwasher. After each use simply rinse off and wipe dry.

In time, a patina will naturally develop on our shiny lather bowls. If you prefer to maintain the shiny finish here is a simple solution: As needed, rub the finish with straight white vinegar and a paper towel. Or, if you wish, the local hardware store will have products to maintain the finish.
