The name for this aftershave has a fascinating history. Widely used by the end of the 17th century, the cat was a whip made from heavy rope. A four-foot length was split into its three component strands to produce a two-and-a-half-foot tail. Each of the three strands was then separated again into three to produce the requisite nine tails. These were knotted at the free ends to prevent fraying, and the handle part was then back-spliced to provide a good handgrip. Once made, the cat was stored in a canvas bag until needed. This is also the origin of the phrase, “Let the cat out of the bag,” which was not something any sailor of yore wanted to hear!
